Twitter has doubled the character limit on tweets to allow its users to convey more meaning or emotion.
On September 27 the official handle of micro-blogging site announced that it will experiment with increasing the character limit to a tweet from 140 to 280 characters.
“Can’t fit your Tweet into 140 characters? 🤔
We’re trying something new with a small group, and increasing the character limit to 280! Excited about the possibilities? Read our blog to find out how it all adds up. 👇”, read the tweet.

The decision was motivated by research carried out by the social network that showed you can convey double the amount of information per character in languages like Japanese, Korean and Chinese than you can in languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.
Only a select group of Twitter users will see their character limits increased, they add. It’s not clear how many people will be included in the test, or how they are chosen. A spokesman for Twitter says it will be rolled out to a random sample of people, and it’s not decided if and when it will reach all users.
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone each explained the decision for the test on Twitter, in tweets that each exceeded the standard 140-character limit.
This is a small change, but a big move for us. 140 was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit. Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet. And at the same time maintaining our brevity, speed, and essence! https://t.co/TuHj51MsTu

Originally, our constraint was 160 (limit of a text) minus username. But we noticed @biz got 1 more than @jack. For fairness, we chose 140. Now texts are unlimited. Also, we realize that 140 isn't fair—there are differences between languages. We're testing the limits. Hello 280!

Tweeple aren’t happy about the amendment. Talking only about Indian users, here are the reactions expressing their dislike in most humorous way possible.
Kejriwal's happiness doubled when Twitter announced doubling the character limit. Now "कड़ी निंदा" will be more heartfelt! 😂

Twitter's #280characters update is not for students like me who'd finish a 1500 word assignment in 700 and still say, "Kaafi likh lia".
